The New Normal for Working Parents

Working Parenthood has been one big affair even before something like Covid 19 came to our lives. With the pandemic however, working parents have been one of the most terribly distracted and burnout with the new normal. They have been particularly impacted as the shift for them came around from different verticals- parents who were already working from home had to now get used to having kids around their working space as most educational institutions had been shut down whereas parents who were shifting to WFH settings required time and planning. Many who relied on childcare had to now make do without the extra help, considering the danger in exposing their children to the added risk from another person, adding more to an already lengthened to-do-list.

One of the biggest concerns that need a fix is the distraction that comes along working from home with a bleak line between work and personal space. As guilty as most of us are, it is perhaps not a good idea to make your couch or the kitchen table the office space you work in. A corner desk well-lit with some greenery, less noise and a general serenity is what working parents should try and inculcate. One thing we can do is get into a flow to create space that isn't as interrupted.

Determining a list of non-negotiables is perhaps another suggestion that a lot of working parents swear by, like strategizing your priorities, getting up a little earlier or having a conversation with your partner about sharing these duties so that you do not constantly struggle with piles of responsibilities. Three simple rules that always work are: One task at a time. A lot of self-compassion. Realistic expectations.
