FAQ
How is coaching different from mentoring?

Coaching is usually a specific set goal in a time-frame and is heavily invested only into achievement of the demarcated goal. Mentorship however, can be as much as a life-long bond between the mentor and the mentee who redefine goals as the mentees journey in life goes on forward. The relationship that both parties share is central to mentorship.

Coaching tends to be more structured and formal than mentorship, where in the latter- open conversations, even informal ones are encouraged. Outcome from a coaching is quite often specific and measurable, showing signs of improvement in the desired performance area. In the case of mentorship, the focus area can shift and change over time. There is less interest in specific, measurable results or changed behaviour and more interest in the overall development of the mentee. To answer what’s more beneficial- it’s definitely the one that suits your personal goals better.

Can I have a coach for my personal life also?

Of course! The most crucial part of coaching is about learning and developing in various aspects of your life. When beginning a relationship with a coach, be sure to discuss what it is you’re hoping to get out of the coaching experience. Set specific, measurable, and meaningful goals towards anything in your life—personal or professional. You can indeed be coached about better ways of living and hustling in life.

Why can’t I get coaching from my managers?

Training and coaching is a learned skill. Good managers are often good support for their juniors or co-workers but the purpose of these relationships is distinct and very deviant from your personal developmental goals. Having a coach who is not your manager provides clear advantages. First, the role of your manager is to make sure first and foremost that you are performing well in your job. The role of your coach is however, to make sure first and foremost that you identify developmental goals that work for you, which may or may not have anything to do with your current job.
