How to regain focus and tame a distracted mind

In this technology-driven world, it is getting easier to get distracted. There is so much buzz going on around that people unwillingly fall trapped into getting distracted by one way or the other. Be it the smartphone, social media, video games, etc., every other thing is trying its level best to grab your attention every minute. Your responsibility amidst all these is to protect yourself from getting distracted. Staying focused is a superpower that is necessary to develop for every business owner and leader. Your ability to stay focused and manage distractions is a critical factor in whether you achieve a productive day or not.

Many people are in denial that they are not prone to distractions, but the truth is otherwise. The GenZ is mostly getting impacted due to this. They don????????t even realize that they are falling into a trap of trends, materials, and bling. Social media itself is controlling the lives of 3/4th of the world population. According to a study released in August 2018 by the UK's telecoms regulator, Ofcom, individuals check their cellphones on average every 12 minutes, with 71% claiming they never switch them off, and 40% claiming they check their phones soon as they wake up. In response to suggestions that excessive social media use can have a severe influence on mental health, Facebook and Instagram both announced they were creating new measures to control consumption.

Practicing focus has become even more important in this era of instant gratification. With good planning and effort, you can also overcome your distractions and get your most important work done each day. Here are a few practices you can adopt to cope with distractions-

  1. List your distractions
    You should know the problem before solving it. Finding what distracts you is the foremost thing you should figure out, and then start working on those factors responsible for distracting you every minute. Make a list of all these things and make strategies to tackle them.

  2. DND your phone
    The Phone is our new friend now. You take it everywhere you go. You get alerted every time the notification bell rings. But it????????s quite disturbing when you are in your ZONE and a cellphone notification or a call can snatch your focus. It????????s better to put your phone in DND (Do not disturb) mode while doing something important which requires your complete focus.

  3. Don????????t extend your break
    Many a time it happens that we take breaks from work and never return! Taking breaks is necessary but be careful to not extend them. Set a realistic time limit and strictly follow it. Come back to your work as soon as the timer stops. You need to be strict with yourself here.

  4. Multitasking is a myth
    While multitasking may appear cool, it divides your attention, which hampers your performance. While you might be able to handle several things at once, your mind will constantly wander off to other tasks, which could interfere with the one you are now working on.

  5. Meditation and physical workout
    Meditation involves focusing on something intently as a way of staying in the present moment and slowing down the inner dialogue, and exercising regularly is one of the easiest and most effective ways to improve concentration, uplift mood, and enhance memory.
    Practicing mindfulness or doing a workout can drastically increase your focus. Saints and Monks have been using mindfulness to boost focus for ages. It's a tried-and-true method that you can employ as well.
